Police have detained former Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore following an investigation into potential charges after his dismissal from the program, Local 4 has confirmed.
Former Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore has been detained by Saline police for potential charges following his dismissal from the football program. As of Wednesday night, Moore was held in Washtenaw County Jail, with no charges or bond yet announced. The Saline Police Department assisted in his detention before transferring him to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for further investigation.
The University of Michigan confirmed that Moore was fired after an internal investigation found credible evidence of him engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. University Athletic Director Warde Manuel stated that such conduct is a clear violation of university policy, which has a zero-tolerance stance on such behavior. Biff Poggi has been appointed as the interim head football coach immediately following Moore's termination.
Moore's career with Michigan began in January 2018 as the tight ends coach. He was promoted to co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach after three seasons. Under his leadership, the Wolverines' offensive line received the Joe Moore Award in 2021 and 2022. He served as interim head coach during Jim Harbaugh's suspension in 2023, contributing to the team's College Football Playoff National Championship run. He was promoted to head coach for the 2024 season, finishing with an 8-5 record, and had a 9-3 record in his second season, preparing the team for the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
Moore had recently been involved in discussing Michigan’s 2026 recruiting class, highlighting players like Savion Hiter, Alister Vallejo, and Marky Walbridge. His unexpected firing raises concerns that these incoming players might consider transferring out of the program. The timing of his dismissal adds to the uncertainty surrounding Michigan's coaching staff and overall program as they prepare for an upcoming bowl game and aim for their 10th win.
