Ford and Mazda on Tuesday instructed owners of some vehicles not to drive their cars due to them still having potentially-dangerous airbags installed.
Active Recall for Dangerous Airbags
Ford and Mazda have issued a 'do not drive' advisory for approximately 457,300 vehicles containing non-desiccated Takata airbag inflators, which are linked to previous recalls. They called for urgent repairs to ensure safety.
Vehicle Breakdown and Numbers
Of the recalled vehicles, around 374,300 are from Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury, while about 83,000 are Mazda vehicles. The recalls encompass models ranging from 2004 to 2015.
Details on Affected Models
Affected Ford models include 2004-2006 Ranger trucks, 2005-2014 Mustangs, and various Lincoln and Mercury models. Mazda’s recalls include certain Mazda6 and CX-7 vehicles.
Risks Associated with Aging Vehicles
The NHTSA warns that many affected vehicles are now over 20 years old, raising the risk of airbag ruptures during crashes. This can potentially lead to severe injury or fatality.
Free Repairs Available
Both automakers noted that replacement parts for the affected airbag inflators are available at dealerships offering free repairs, towing services, and loaner vehicles.
Proactive Communication with Customers
Ford and Mazda have implemented processes to regularly contact affected vehicle owners to schedule repairs and urge them to stop driving the recalled vehicles until they can get serviced.
