Two days before the 2025 Kentucky Derby, Junior Alvarado, who’s set to ride Sovereignty, fell off his horse during a Thurby race at Churchill Downs but was not injured.
Incident during Thurby race
Jockey Junior Alvarado fell off his horse Caramel Chip during the ninth race at Churchill Downs when the horse stumbled out of the gate. Despite the fall, both Alvarado and Caramel Chip were reported to be uninjured.
Upcoming Kentucky Derby participation
Alvarado is scheduled to ride Sovereignty in the prestigious 151st Kentucky Derby, held two days after the Thurby race incident.
Recent Racing Performance
Although Alvarado is currently 0 for 5 in the Kentucky Derby, he secured a victory riding Classic Legacy in the eighth race at Churchill Downs on the same day as the fall.
Race Outcome for Caramel Chip
Caramel Chip finished second in the race but was disqualified and subsequently corralled following the incident involving Alvarado’s fall.
