Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) is increasingly integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations to enhance the accuracy of weather models, particularly in forecasting elevated wildfire risks. This strategic shift is crucial for the utility, which has been implementing Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) since 2018. These shutoffs involve de-energizing power lines in specific service areas to prevent utility equipment from initiating wildfires during severe weather conditions, characterized by dry winds. The adoption of AI aims to make these preventative measures more precise and effective, minimizing disruption while maximizing safety.
According to PG&E Chief Meteorologist Scott Strenfel, the company's AI prediction model utilizes historical data and advanced machine learning algorithms to significantly boost the reliability of its forecasts. The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) anticipates an 'above normal' fire potential extending into September for Northern California. This heightened risk is primarily attributed to several factors: an unusually early growing season that has led to an abundance of vegetation, a poor snowpack contributing to dry and flammable fuels, and a predicted increase in extreme weather events involving heat, wind, and lightning. Cal Fire reports that, while the number of individual wildfires this year is lower than last, the total acreage consumed is approximately 80,000 acres, exceeding the five-year average by about 20,000 acres, underscoring the severity of the current fire season.
