Stefon Diggs allegedly hit and then choked one of his female employees during a dispute over money earlier this month, according to a newly released police report.
A police report, initially obtained by PEOPLE, reveals that New England Patriots star Stefon Diggs allegedly assaulted a female employee at his Dedham, Massachusetts, home on December 2nd. The altercation reportedly involved Diggs slapping and choking the woman, and stemmed from a financial disagreement. This incident took place the day after Diggs contributed to his team's 'Monday Night Football' victory over the Giants.
The alleged victim, who had been employed by Diggs but quit after the December 2nd incident, first reported the assault to the police on December 16th. Although she initially declined to press charges, she informed authorities on December 23rd that she wished to proceed with the case. Consequently, Stefon Diggs is now facing one felony count of strangulation and one misdemeanor count of assault. His arraignment is scheduled for January 23rd, which is just two days before the AFC Championship game is set to kick off.
Stefon Diggs has vehemently denied the allegations through his attorney, David Meier. Meier stated that the claims are 'unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated — because they did not occur.' He further suggested that the timing and motivation behind the allegations are a direct result of an unresolved financial dispute between Diggs and the former employee. The New England Patriots organization has also issued a statement, affirming their support for Diggs and indicating their commitment to gather more information and cooperate fully with appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary.
The National Football League (NFL) has confirmed that it is aware of the allegations against Stefon Diggs and is in communication with the New England Patriots regarding the matter. Despite the developing legal situation, Diggs has maintained a strong performance this season. He has recorded 82 catches for 970 yards and four touchdowns across 16 games. The Patriots recently secured the AFC East title and are preparing for an upcoming game against the Dolphins before entering their postseason play.
