The Robinhood Investor Index tracks the most-owned stocks on the platform.
The Robinhood Investor Index, which tracks retail investor sentiment, has a new entrant in its top five: Space Exploration Technologies Corp (SPCX), an artificial intelligence company. This isn't surprising given SpaceX's immense popularity, driven by its founder Elon Musk, its pioneering work in reusable rockets for space exploration, its Starlink satellite internet service with 12 million subscribers, and its acquisition of xAI, which encompasses various AI businesses. SpaceX recently completed the largest IPO ever, raising nearly $86 billion and achieving a $1.88 trillion valuation.
Retail investors show high conviction in SpaceX, potentially propelling it to the top spot in the Robinhood Investor Index. While Starlink is a strong, profitable business, the company's valuation heavily banks on its ambitious AI division, which SpaceX projects to have a total addressable market of $26.5 trillion. These goals include launching data centers into space, rapidly capturing AI compute, and developing AI enterprise applications that mimic human workflows. All these depend on the Starship rocket achieving consistent weekly or daily operational flights. While success could lead to significant value appreciation, the speculative nature of these endeavors means failure could trigger a major sell-off, suggesting a cautious, speculative investment approach.
