Bowie State University is launching a bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence this fall, preparing students for careers across technology, healthcare, cybersecurity and other industries.
Bowie State University is launching a 120-credit Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence program on campus in Fall 2026. The curriculum will cover essential AI areas such as machine learning, robotics, computer vision, and AI ethics.
The 120-credit Artificial Intelligence program will commence in Fall 2026, providing students with comprehensive foundational and advanced instruction. The coursework is designed to develop technical skills, foster critical thinking, and instill a strong sense of ethical responsibility in the context of AI. Graduates will be prepared to develop, evaluate, and implement intelligent technologies while also critically examining the social and ethical implications of AI advancements.
The curriculum will expose students to a broad range of AI-related fields, including machine learning, data analytics, intelligent systems, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, autonomous technologies, AI ethics, and the application of AI models in medical contexts. This comprehensive program aims to equip students for successful careers in diverse sectors such as healthcare, cybersecurity, education, business, government, and advanced technology industries.
Bowie State University President Aminta H. Breaux stated that this new degree marks a significant stride in the university's mission to offer academic programs that address contemporary societal challenges and emerging opportunities. She highlighted the university's goal to cultivate a diverse cohort of technology leaders capable of influencing the development and application of artificial intelligence. Rosemary Shumba, Chair of the Department of Computer Science, noted the existing involvement of faculty and students in AI research and expressed confidence that the program will provide students with opportunities for cutting-edge research, problem-solving, and making substantial contributions to one of the world's fastest-growing fields.
Bowie State University emphasizes that the new AI degree program reinforces its commitment to broadening access to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. This initiative also aims to increase representation in high-growth technology sectors.
