Roy Jakobs, CEO Philips, emphasizes AI's new phase of real-world impact, becoming embedded in systems that shape industries and everyday life, delivering tangible benefits from patient care to smarter products and services.
Key Findings from the Clarivate AI50 Report
The report highlights several critical insights into the leading AI innovators. It details how organizations driving foundational AI invention are spearheading the development of core technologies, pushing patented breakthroughs in model architecture, hardware, and platform capabilities. It also identifies organizations demonstrating deep, domain-focused AI innovation, intensely specializing in targeted application areas to translate AI techniques into high-impact applications. A significant finding is the higher rate of cross-border and academic collaboration among the AI50, with approximately 10% of inventions involving academic partners and 20% featuring international inventor teams. Furthermore, government and academic research organizations make up a substantial portion of the cohort, underscoring their pivotal role in advancing AI fundamentals.
Detailed Methodology
The inaugural AI50 list is derived from a focused analysis of AI inventions indexed within the Derwent World Patents Index. Each invention is scored using a Clarivate invention-level metric to determine its strength. The top 0.5% of these high-strength AI inventions are selected, with a further criterion that they must have patent family members in at least two countries. Each qualifying invention is then attributed to its current ultimate owner, and organizations are ranked based on the number of these inventions they own. The top 50 organizations (with a tie resulting in 52 organizations this year) constitute the Clarivate AI50.
