CCAI needed branding that reflected their important mission to protect human creatives. Decimal delivered a comprehensive brand identity, including a logo, color system, and an innovative web-based drawing tool, all designed to highlight human agency in the evolving landscape of AI in the entertainment industry.
Raphael Guenassia detailed the initial brief from The Creators Coalition on Artificial Intelligence (CCAI), an organization dedicated to establishing policies and practices that support the sustainability of creative communities amidst rapidly evolving AI technologies. While their immediate focus was the entertainment industry, they envisioned their mission expanding to many other sectors. Their core need was to finalize a cohesive brand presence, specifically a distinctive logo and a comprehensive color system. Beyond these fundamental elements, CCAI also sought the development of a broader suite of brand assets. This included motion graphics suitable for video content, various visuals for their website, and compelling graphics for social media platforms. Although CCAI had explored several internal design concepts, they recognized the need for a professional creative partner like Decimal to refine their vision and elevate their brand identity to a higher, more impactful level, ensuring it effectively communicated their critical advocacy.
Wenqing Ma elaborated on the deliberate strategy to infuse the brand identity with a profound sense of the human element, a challenging but crucial task given the AI-centric context. The team aimed to underscore human voices as the primary driving force while maintaining relevance within the contemporary AI landscape. This tension between human creativity and artificial intelligence was explored through several design choices across the identity system. For instance, the logo ingeniously reinterpreted the conventional 'sparkle'—often a symbol of AI's magical capabilities—by rendering it as a negative space. This sparkle only becomes visible through the convergence of four distinct circles, symbolizing a coalition. This design subtly conveys the message that technology should serve the collective human endeavor, rather than dominating it. Furthermore, recognizing the prevalent use of gradients in AI tech branding, Decimal incorporated gradients but deliberately added imperfections, making them less 'perfect' and more 'human.' The development of a unique web-based drawing tool further reinforced this concept by actively inviting community participation and allowing individuals to express their voices through a distinctly human creative act, reaffirming the central role of human agency.
Wenqing Ma explained that the web-based brush tool emerged as an unexpected yet highly synergistic component of the branding project. Initially, the design team was exploring various visual textures that could convey a human touch while still functioning effectively on digital screens. Given the project's tight timeline, a strategic approach to generating scalable visuals was essential. This led to the idea of creating an internal tool that could streamline the graphic creation process. As the team experimented with this tool, its potential to amplify the core narrative of CCAI naturally became apparent. CCAI's fundamental purpose is to be a movement by people and for people, and the interactive brush tool offered a direct way to involve the community, making the brand more dynamic and participatory. The act of a brush gesture powerfully symbolizes the human hand's presence and tackles the overarching relationship between human creators and AI. It highlights AI's role as merely a tool, much like a traditional brush, and one that is fundamentally dependent on the creative communities that preceded and continue to drive its development. Ma gratefully acknowledged the significant contributions from open-source creators like Steve of Steve’s Makerspace, Tyler Hobbs, and Alejandro Campos of p5.brush, whose work on watercolor strokes in p5.js was instrumental in the realization of this innovative tool.
