A federal judge has ruled in favor of artificial intelligence company Anthropic in its legal battle against the Pentagon, deeming the government's actions illegal and baseless.
A federal judge, Rita Lin, has issued an order declaring that the Pentagon acted illegally by labeling artificial intelligence company Anthropic as a supply chain risk. The ruling states that these measures were baseless and taken to punish Anthropic for its criticism of the Department of Defense’s stance on AI use, rather than any genuine sabotage concerns. The government is expected to challenge this decision.
The conflict originated in February when President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accused Anthropic of threatening national security. This accusation followed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's refusal to compromise on concerns that the company's AI products could be misused for mass surveillance or autonomous armed drones. The judge highlighted that the government's actions were driven by a desire to 'make a public example' of Anthropic's perceived 'arrogance'.
Anthropic expressed satisfaction with the judge's ruling, reiterating its commitment to collaborative work with the government for national security while ensuring ethical AI use. The legal battle has brought to light an ongoing public debate regarding the military and surveillance applications of AI technology. This situation is further complicated by Anthropic's rival, OpenAI, having secured a deal with the Pentagon shortly after Anthropic's designation, and both companies preparing for initial public offerings.
Prior to this final ruling, Judge Lin had already temporarily halted the Pentagon's actions, citing concerns about potential First Amendment violations and the government's weakening case. Department of Justice lawyers argued that the 'staggeringly enormous and opaque' nature of AI models made traditional evaluations difficult. However, Anthropic's counsel argued that the government's measures were profoundly damaging to the company and threatened to stifle vital speech and debate surrounding AI.
