Larimer County plans to test new AI-powered sound detection technology to identify wildfires early. Most wildfire detection systems look for smoke. This one listens for fire.
Due to a drier-than-normal winter and insufficient rainfall, Colorado faces high wildfire risks. Larimer County is piloting an innovative AI-powered sound detection system developed by an Israeli startup. This technology departs from traditional smoke-based detection by listening for unique sound signatures produced by fires, aiming to identify wildfires before smoke or visible flames appear.
Michael Ben Aharon, Chief Revenue Officer for FireWave, detailed the device's impressive capabilities, stating it can detect a one-square-yard fire within two minutes from 50 yards away, significantly faster than visual detection. Colorado was chosen for the pilot program due to its unique geography, where forests are in close proximity to communities, making early detection crucial to prevent widespread destruction.
The FireWave system employs advanced AI to distinguish between the sounds of an actual wildfire and common, innocuous noises such as a backyard barbecue or crackling wood. Its design allows it to continuously learn and improve its accuracy in identifying fire-specific sound patterns, enhancing reliability over time.
Justin Whitesell, Chief of Emergency Services for the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, expressed enthusiasm for the technology, seeing it as a vital innovation to boost wildfire response effectiveness. He emphasized that earlier warnings from these devices would be a significant improvement over the current reliance on 911 calls, particularly in quickly and accurately pinpointing the exact location of a fire, which is often a major challenge for first responders.
Ben Aharon indicated that the AI detection technology is best suited for deployment in high-risk areas, such as campgrounds where fires might originate, or high-value locations that are critical to protect. Currently, the device is undergoing testing at a summer camp, and FireWave intends to broaden the program to include more fire departments in the future. Denver7 will monitor the performance of this technology throughout the summer.
