AARP Hawai‘i is holding a series of workshops on Maui to inform the public about harmful and helpful uses for artificial intelligence – how it is being used in frauds; how to tell the difference between reality and AI; and how to use AI to express creativity. These workshops aim to make people smarter about AI, recognizing its potential for deception while also exploring its creative applications.
Aug. 8: “Spot & Avoid Scams: Old Tricks. New AI Tactics” with Gary Albitz
This workshop, led by Gary Albitz at the Malcolm Center (1305 Holopono Street Suite 1), focuses on educating the public about the evolving landscape of scams. It will specifically address how traditional deceptive tactics are being enhanced and made more sophisticated through the use of artificial intelligence, and provide strategies for recognizing and avoiding such AI-powered frauds.
Aug. 11: “AI and Disinformation”
Held at the Kaunoa Senior Center (401 Alakapa Place), this session will delve into the critical topic of how artificial intelligence contributes to the creation and spread of disinformation. Attendees will learn to identify AI-generated misleading content and develop skills to critically evaluate information, distinguishing reality from AI-fabricated narratives.
Aug. 25: “AI Image Generators”
Also taking place at the Kaunoa Senior Center (401 Alakapa Place), this workshop will explore the functionality and implications of AI image generators. Participants will gain insight into how these tools create visual content, learn techniques to discern real images from AI-generated ones, and potentially discover ways to utilize AI for personal creative expression, aligning with the workshop series' goal of understanding AI's helpful and creative uses.
