Oneida County is actively investing in its future workforce by providing participants of the Summer Youth Employment Program with an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Awareness course. This comprehensive program, developed in partnership with Mohawk Valley Community College, introduced approximately 80 participants to the rapidly evolving field of AI during the first week of August. The curriculum was designed to give students a practical understanding of AI's significant impact on education, various career paths, and daily life. A core focus was on promoting the responsible use of AI, teaching participants to view it as a powerful learning tool rather than a quick solution for academic tasks. Additionally, the course covered crucial aspects of digital literacy, such as identifying AI-generated misinformation, including fake videos and manipulated online content, and underscored the enduring necessity of critical thinking skills in an AI-driven world. The initiative reflects the county's commitment to equipping its youth with the knowledge and skills vital for navigating a technologically advanced economy, ensuring they are prepared for opportunities AI will generate.

The Artificial Intelligence Awareness course consisted of four separate four-hour sessions, expertly delivered by Franca Armstrong, who serves as the Executive Director of Apprenticeship Programs at Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC). The curriculum delved into a balanced perspective, exploring both the substantial benefits that artificial intelligence offers across various domains and the inherent risks associated with its misuse. A significant emphasis was placed on guiding students to utilize AI effectively as a supplementary learning tool, rather than solely relying on it as a shortcut for completing their academic assignments. Beyond the technical aspects, students were educated on vital skills for the digital age, including how to critically identify AI-generated misinformation, such as deceptive videos and fabricated online content, which is increasingly prevalent. The course also aimed to provide a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms of AI systems and to continually reinforce why strong critical thinking abilities remain indispensable in an environment where AI tools are becoming commonplace. David Mathis, director of the Oneida County Office of Workforce Development, highlighted the transformative nature of these skills, stating that "Using AI the right way is going to be one of the make-or-break skills for our emerging workforce." He further emphasized that this pilot program served as a crucial introduction to technology that will gain increasing importance throughout the participants' professional lives, while simultaneously bolstering the values of independent thought and judicious decision-making.
