A smarter, interactive tutor
Khanmigo now offers enhanced learning experiences by leveraging Gemini's advanced reasoning capabilities to generate interactive visual aids and diagrams. When a visual could assist with a math or science problem, Khanmigo creates charts, geometric shapes, and more, dynamically adjusting the lesson as students interact with elements like vertices or line segments. Google engineers collaborated closely with Khan Academy to define quality metrics for these diagrams, ensuring their relevance, helpfulness, and clarity, and integrated a feedback mechanism for continuous improvement. Early results show increased student engagement and better performance after using these diagrams.
A teacher-controlled workflow
This partnership also led to the redesign of Khan Academy’s Practice My Knowledge tool, empowering teachers with greater control over practice materials. While the initial goal was AI-generated multiple-choice questions, the collaboration with Google fellows enabled a comprehensive overhaul, making the tool fully editable, scorable, and reviewable by educators. Teachers can now use Gemini to plan, draft, and validate practice questions, even referencing their own uploaded materials. Before assignments are distributed, teachers review and refine them, ensuring appropriate difficulty levels, and afterwards receive detailed performance reports for assessment. The core philosophy is that Gemini assists in drafting, but teachers maintain final authority over what students receive.
