Music creation platform Splice has introduced a new suite of AI-powered tools designed to compensate original sample creators when their sounds are utilized to generate new material. This initiative aims to blend Splice’s extensive catalog of human-made, licensed samples with generative AI capabilities, ensuring ethical usage and fair remuneration for artists.
The "Variations" feature is a cornerstone of Splice's new AI suite, integrated directly into the Splice Sounds plugin. It empowers music producers to generate fresh iterations of any sample found within Splice's vast catalog. Users can intelligently modify key attributes such as the sample's structure, musical key, and beats per minute (BPM) while crucially retaining the core sonic identity and character of the original sound. A significant ethical component of this tool is its compensation model: the original creator of the sample is paid not only when their sound is selected as a source for generating variations, but also each time a new variation created from their sound is downloaded by another user. This mechanism ensures that artists are fairly rewarded for the continued utility and creative potential of their work in an AI-driven environment.
Craft represents another innovative addition to Splice's offerings, specifically designed for its INSTRUMENT plugin. This tool revolutionizes how producers interact with samples by transforming them into fully playable virtual instruments. Instead of just using samples as static audio snippets, Craft allows creators to convert these samples into dynamic, controllable instruments. This capability significantly expands creative possibilities, enabling deeper manipulation and integration of unique sounds into musical compositions, turning individual samples into versatile building blocks for entire tracks, all while maintaining the integrity and licensing of the original sound.
Scheduled for release in summer 2026, "Magic Fit" is an eagerly anticipated generative AI tool that promises to enhance workflow efficiency and musical cohesion. This feature will automatically adjust and adapt sounds to precisely align with the harmonic and rhythmic context of a producer’s current music session. The goal is to eliminate manual adjustments, ensuring that newly incorporated sounds seamlessly blend with existing tracks in terms of pitch, tempo, and groove. This contextual adaptation aims to streamline the music production process, making it faster and more intuitive for artists to achieve a polished and unified sound across their projects.
Splice's launch of these AI tools is part of a broader, aggressive strategy to lead in AI-powered music creation, building on substantial investments and strategic acquisitions. In April 2025, the company acquired UK-based virtual instrument library Spitfire Audio for an estimated $50 million, a move that directly facilitated the subsequent launch of Splice INSTRUMENT. Demonstrating its commitment to generative AI, Splice further expanded its capabilities in January 2026 by acquiring Kits AI, an AI-powered voice production platform. A significant industry collaboration was forged in December 2025 when Splice partnered with Universal Music Group. This partnership aims to jointly develop "next generation of AI-powered music creation tools for artists," highlighting a collaborative approach to shaping the future of music technology and ensuring a licensed, ethical framework for AI integration within the music industry. Splice CEO Kakul Srivastava emphasized that these tools are "Grounded in deep, long-standing relationships with producers and sound creators," reinforcing their value to original artists by enabling sounds to be "reshaped and reimagined" while preserving the value of original work through compensation.
