The federal grant was officially announced by Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-Santa Barbara, during a gathering of UCSB administrators and engineering faculty at the OASIS facility in Goleta. Dr. Javier Read de Alaniz, a distinguished professor in UCSB's department of chemistry and biochemistry, and a co-director of BioPACIFIC MIP, highlighted the transformative potential of the lab, stating that researchers would be able to 'run research from anywhere at any time.' BioPACIFIC MIP, a federally funded initiative focusing on synthetic biology, chemistry, and materials science research, is a key partner with UCSB in this project. UCSB's inclusion in this program places it alongside other prestigious institutions such as Stanford, Caltech, and Scripps, which are also operating similar AI-programmable cloud laboratories, underscoring the importance and national scope of this endeavor.
The OASIS facility, where the new AI cloud lab will be housed, has been operational in Goleta since the previous fall. It serves as a dynamic hub that brings together student researchers, as well as private and public companies, to collaborate on advanced technological projects. The facility's design incorporates open office spaces, equipped with desktops and cubicles, strategically surrounded by various specialized laboratories where student researchers conduct their work. The concept for OASIS was originally the 'brain child' of Umesh Mishra, who is the dean of the Robert Mehrabian college of engineering, emphasizing a vision for integrated research and development.
The $20 million grant, secured over a four-year period, was awarded to UCSB through the National Science Foundation, a testament to the project's national significance and potential impact. Rachel Segalman, vice chancellor for research at UCSB, clarified the parameters for external access: a stringent vetting process is required for all researchers seeking to work remotely at the OASIS facility.
