Utah education leaders are partnering with Google to expand access to artificial intelligence tools in public schools, a move they said will help students develop AI literacy while giving educators new tools to support classroom instruction.
Focus on privacy and safety
The partnership emphasizes strengthening privacy protections by establishing a statewide data privacy agreement with Google. This framework ensures student interactions with Gemini for Education remain within secure school-managed environments and that data will not be used to train Google’s AI models, complying with federal laws like FERPA.
Addressing concerns about cheating
Despite worries about students using AI for academic dishonesty, research from Stanford University indicates that cheating rates have not significantly changed with the rise of generative AI. The rollout plans include AI literacy instruction to teach students how to use AI responsibly, fostering a positive learning experience rather than enabling misconduct.
A shift similar to the internet era
The integration of AI into education is compared to the internet's advent, highlighting AI's unique ability to create tailored content. Google will offer training and career certificate programs for educators and students through December 2027, aiming to equip them with essential skills for an increasingly AI-driven future and workforce.
